Title: Phantom of the Play
Author: jsblume
Style/Genre Prose / Fiction / Horror
Description: A real phantom appears during a dress rehearsal.
Notes: Write a Horror piece about a journalist who has a part in a play. At some point, the journalist must appear in a moon and encounter a soldering iron (not necessarily at the same time).

Brenda pushes the door open with her hip, hurries down the aisle, and runs onto the stage. She carefully sets her purse and laptop bag down in one corner.

"Sorry I’m late," she says. "I had a deadline."

"It’s alright, we just finished with the set," Andy says. "We’re going to work on the scene in the dressing room, right after your debut. Martin!"

Andy walks across the stage, looking for Martin.

Brenda goes into the dressing room set and sits down in front of the mirror. Martin arrives and stands by the door to the room.

"Okay, let’s take it from where Raoul first arrives at Christine’s dressing room."

Martin takes a breath to begin his lines when a phantom appears in the mirror.

"No, no, Greg! You’re too soon!"

Brenda stands and backs away as the phantom oozes out of the mirror, hovering over the dresser. The amorphous shape develops a mouth with long fangs. It jumps forward, growling, and attempts to bite Brenda on the arm.

"Eek!" Brenda cries, backing into Martin.

The phantom jumps forward again, sinking its teeth into Martin’s arm and ripping a large chunk of skin and muscle off.

"Ahh!" Martin screams and falls to the floor. Brenda darts around him and runs out of the room.

The phantom settles onto the writhing body of Martin, completely covering him. It rises a moment later and all that’s left of Martin is a pile of bones in a pool of blood. It takes off after Brenda.

Brenda runs past Steve, who is soldering an electrical panel. He looks up to see the phantom coming at him. Startled and frightened, his hands shoot up and the soldering iron in his hand flies threw the air, narrowly missing Brenda.

She stops for a moment and watches in horror as the phantom devours Steve. As soon as it’s finished, it started moving towards her again. Brenda turns and runs into a rope. She becomes entangled in the rope, and her frantic effort to free herself loosens a knot. She stumbles away and falls to the floor.

The rope unravels and runs up to the ceiling. Brenda looks up to see a prop of the moon as it falls. She covers her head as it lands on top of her. When she uncovers her head, she sees that she is inside the prop. Brenda tries to stand up, but trips on the edge of the hole in the moon. She falls and the moon rolls off the stage. She lands hard in front of the first row.

She looks up to see the phantom descending. Her scream is cut short as the phantom envelopes and consumes her.
